What Do Maria Andros and I Have in Common?

Is it we are both young, good looking and on top of our game?

Of course, but the answer for the purposes of this blog post is we are both using video to brand and market ourselves online.

OK, so Maria Andros may be a famous video marketer watched by millions of people on Youtube everyday whereas I am an internet nobody with little more than a webcam and a dream, but hey, we all have to start somewhere.

I was fortunate enough to listen in to a recorded call between my mentor, Alex Jeffreys and social media marketing queen Maria last week and it really opened my mind to the power of video marketing.

Maria is undoubtedly the best in the business when it comes to promoting via video and listening to her enthusiasm about what can be achieved with video made me realise this is an area I need to get good at.

I have always been a bit apprehensive about recording videos.

I don’t think I have a particularly good screen presence, my accent is not what I would call appealing and I’ve never believed that I could put out videos as good as some I have seen made by some of the bigger players in internet marketing.

However, the mantra throughout the coaching process has always been “don’t get it perfect, get it going” and “good enough is good enough” and I have tried to apply those principles to everything I have done so far.

Today I thought it was time to bite the bullet and get my blog introduction done. I have seen numerous other students on the coaching produce their videos and if video is going to be the way forward, I don’t want to get left behind.

Take a look at my effort below:

I realise my video isn’t perfect but it’s not like I have had professional media training or spent hours honing my camera skills either so I think it is as good as can be expected. I am sure I will get better as I produce more videos.

What surprised me, though, was I didn’t find the process that nerve wracking.

After practicing a few times in front of the webcam with it switched off and then finally plucking up the courage to turn it on, I felt quite comfortable in front of the camera and actually began to enjoy it.

What I found worse, was forgetting what I was going to say and stumbling over my words which forced me to record take after take. But again, I think that will improve over time.

Recording this video has sparked an interest in me and I am looking forward to producing a lot more videos in the very near future!

Let me know what you think by leaving me a comment below!

Hi Marcus,

Thanks for your comment. I have a long way to go before I am up to your standard though – you seem to put out a new video every five minutes!

I think putting a video in the corner of your blog is a great idea. It will be one of the first things your visitors will see and seeing you in the flesh should help to build a rapport quicker!

Hi Peter,

You just need to get these things done! You are not really “falling behind” as there is no time limit.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for the kind words. I am going to try and put a call to action into every video. It seems like a good idea. If people enjoy your video and you ask them to do something there must be a good chance they will do it?

Hey David,

Well done for taking action, and great welcome video, you wouldn’t think it was first. It certainly improves your blog & helps capture your readers attention straight away.

I’ve not gotten round to doing mine first vid yet, It’s a bit of a big deal for me if I can get this done. Before I enrolled in AJ’s coaching I hadn’t even put my pic on the net before, but this coaching has really made my confidence grow.

I’m going to have a practice tomorrow, I’m too tired to do it now, I’m adding it to tomorrows task list now. Hopefully I’ll produce something good enough to post.

Paul.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for the kind words about my video – it’s not perfect but “good enough” for the time being. I could spend hours and hours trying to get the “perfect” take” but what would be the point?

I saw your video this morning. It’s an excellent first attempt and you can only get better with time!

Hey David

Awesome job on your video :-)

I know what you mean, it’s not half as bad as you think it’s going to be. I have done a couple now, and it does get easier.

I look forward to your next videos, you’re doing great :-D

Hi David,

Looks great, you must be happy that you were pretty comfortable and it wasn’t ‘nerve wracking’. I was very self conscious and nervous doing my first video.

I look forward to you future videos, keep up the great work.

Cheers

Bravo David,

You are way ahead of me. As Alex says, the important thing is to get it started and not worry about getting it perfect.

David! Can you imagine I haven’t even seen you video yet?
I know I know, this post is all about that but I’m having trouble with my internet connection.

But man, can you write. I started smiling midway through the post and I’m stil smiling.
If you can get that repsonse whatever medium you choose, you’ll be set for life. Sprinkle in a bit of mentorship from someone who knows what he’s doing and prepare for an avalanche of visitors all singing your praise :)

Hi Gil,

Thanks for your comment. I was always good at writing at school and even considered a career in journalism until I realised the money was terrible!

I am passionate about making money online (or more to the point, keeping myself out of a “proper job”) so writing about it comes quite easily to me.

I hope that avalanche of visitors comes and of course you are welcome back any time to join them :-)

Hi Nick,

Yes it was just my webcam – not great but it will do for the time being until I get some better kit!
