Today’s Wake Up Call – I Suck!

I am two days in to Rich Schefren’s GPS program and while I am still supposed to be on the “easy” and “introductory” modules, I have had another severe wake up call this morning. The conclusion I have come to after today’s short assignment is, to put it bluntly, that I suck!

A small task designed by Rich’s mentor, Michael Masterson, aimed to determine how many hours I spent each week on a major goal, whether I used task lists and whether these tasks all built towards meeting weekly, monthly and even yearly objectives. It also looked at how distracted I was on a daily basis.

Whereas I thought I was a reasonably focused, dilligent worker, the test result suggested otherwise. While I wasn’t the worst type of worker on the list, I fell into the category one below. The verdict on me was:

You are showing up. You think you are a good worker, but you are not. Your chances of success are probably less than 10%.

Less than 10%? Ouch.

I have been working for myself for the past three years and have arguably made much more money than I could have reasonably expected if I was to have a “proper” job working here in South Wales, but does this mean I have winged it until now? If I am being completely honest it does feel like that sometimes.

Not for the first time this week I now understand things have to change dramatically if I am to be as successful online as I know I can and should be and no doubt I will face plenty more home truths over the coming weeks.

Today was not all doom and gloom because I was also given the opportunity to write down the components for what would create an ideal life for myself in 12 months time. If I can achieve the following then I will have made a lot of progress from where I am now:

Successful Business: I want my name to become a recognised brand in the world of internet marketing and for this blog to be popular and established. I would like to be able to consistently earn $20,000 per month from my efforts online.

Effective Entrepreneur: I want to be a person who takes action on a set of well defined goals and works with a sense of urgency to achieve them. I no longer want to procrastinate and waste time idly each day and want to be confident in communicating with other marketers to network and set up joint venture opportunities.

Fulfilling Personal Life: I want to be able to detach myself from thinking about my business 24/7 so I can enjoy a close relationship with my girlfriend and family without money and work continuously playing on my mind.

I know I have a long way to go before I can achieve the above goals but hopefully the coaching and a change of both mindset and attitude can help me get there!

Wow, that was a pretty harsh verdict. You can’t be that bad if you’ve made more money online than a traditional job. That’s the thing about tests like this overall; their criteria might not fit your life.

I believe you are in the right mindset and those “failures” disguised as wake-up calls are somehow benchmarks for your impending success. Great businessmen have always used such fertile imagination and planning you are exhibiting…they think ahead and create their mental picture in all its details, filling in here, adding a little there, altering this a bit and that a bit, but steadily building – steadily building. No doubt you are getting there. All the best!

    The Way I see it,

is that you’re only using 10% of your focus – and you making all that money…
Imagine how much you’ll make when you focus on your goals
you’ll make 90% more money.. hehe

Good Lord, dude…you think you suck…i’m sitting here with forty nine eleven dozen printed out e-books and a copy of Dreamweaver MX for dummies stacked on three desks, virtually obscuring my two computers, still can’t build a decent blog, can’t even load the load of PLR pre-made websites…technically defunct is my brain…i’ve started blogs, deleted blogs, started blogs, deleted blogs…if one more brain cell fires in another different “guru’s” direction, i think it might hemmorhage…but i swear to you man, i’m gonna take the rest of this year off, read some schlock-ass james patterson books or some other fiction (heck, most of the e-books i’ve read could fall in that category; and if i read one more book whose “secret weapon” is aweber, i will most definitely croak! i mean, no kidding, what i need os someone to show me how to use Dreamweaver!).

But hey, it’s all good…i can play the guitar!

ok first of all as far as I am concerned you are already a success. But I wanted to address jame problem with dreamweaver, I tried dream weaver a couple of years ago and it has a huge learning curb. Ilike kompozer for its simplicity.and its free!

yes, kompozer is cool…thanks for the reply…anyone want to talk guitar?…think i’ll start a blog for old guitarists…maybe blogging about something i know and like will be the trick…then i’ll monetize it if it kicks…point me to the six stringers…ciao

    David,
This is getting more interesting. I always have wondered how you decided on .tv as a domain extension vs. dot com?

Was this part of your branding decision, or was it the only thing that was available with your name?

    Thanks

      Hi Evan,

It was mainly to do with the other extensions being taken!

Unfortunately I have quite a common name (search it in Google, there’s about 22 million competing web pages!) and rather than go for hyphens, including other initials or my middle name, all of which will make my blog less memorable, I opted for the dot tv suffix.

I think it’s still brandable and oddly enough I am getting some “david walker tv” related search engine traffic!

    Hi David:

Thanks for sharing this so candidly! LOL!

While I am part of Alex Jeffreys’ community, I’ve yet to have the advantage of any of Rich’s teaching materials.

I’m curious as to what role each of these gentlemen’s lessons have played in your business growth, in the past year. And whether you’ve gone on to purchase more training from either of them?

    Keep striving!
