Something for the Weekend 18 July 2009

I am proud to present a special Something for the Weekend post this week. The reason it’s special is not only because it includes 10 great links rather than the usual five, but all the posts have been produced by my fellow students on the Alex Jeffreys coaching program. The standard of posts haveĀ  been nothing short of astounding, especially when you consider some of the people involved are completely new to blogging. Anyway, enough of me trying to steal their thunder, here are the posts which have really stood out for me this week. Enjoy.

A lot of the early coaching has centred around a solid foundation of planning so it is no surprise that a lot of blog content has reflected this so far. One post which caught my attention was by Alan Harris, who took this a step further and produced a video showing how he has used the wall in his hall as a gigantic planner board! It really is something else and I don’t think the missus would be too happy if I tried the same thing at my house!

A thought provoking post came from Karen Kalata who based an article around Alex’s quote: “an idiot with a plan will always beat a genius without one“. Unfortunately I have been that genius for way too long. I am happy to say that my days of flitting from one money making escapade to the next have come to an end!

Gil Dotan continued the planning theme with his #1 reason people fail online. It’s so easy to become a victim of information overload and you need to focus on what needs to be done rather than getting lost among the noise.

A lot of Alex’s coaching focuses on building a super responsive list and I enjoyed Andrew Vaughan’s nine things you need to create a list while Paul Hooper also produced a good video on list building.

Talking of videos, I cannot fail to be anything but impressed by Marcus Passey and his determination to succeed. He set a precident this week with not one but TWO introductory videos and I am looking forward to watching his on-screen presence grow in the coming weeks.

Neil Marsh weighed in with a rather hefty post on the art of blogging. His article includes 10 powerful tips on producing an effective blog and I particularly agree with his point on adding value to other people’s blogs. Since I have started commenting on other blogs, comments to mine have increased significantly!

Search engine optimisation is something all bloggers should consider because a lot of traffic will come via Google et al and Keith Purkiss outlined the importance behind ranking top for your name on the search engines.

Matt Wolfe, who has been blogging like a madman over the past two weeks, revealed some “sneaky” marketing tricks. Well, not so much sneaky, but ways you can add value to your customers in order to maximise your chances of earning affiliate commissions.

Finally, Roger Edwards wrote a great blog post about the first brainstorming session we had with Alex on Thursday night. Roger has proven himself to be a great story teller and I am looking forward to more of his writing.

Do you think I made the right choice with this week’s selection or do you think I missed out some great content by another student? Whatever your thoughts, please leave a comment below!

Great blog David, I am envious, of course envy is a worthless emotion, let me change that.
I would be proud to exchange ideas with you. I am still trying to decide whether to continue on a blog I’ve had for some time or to migrate to a new blog I just started,
    http://6degreesofseparationonline.com.
Would appreciate your input on either of these.
Thanks again nice to meet you.
    Norm
PS: I’m doing the unforgiveable as I write this comment. I am watching the Open on TV. Tom Watson is just finishing the 18th and for crying outloud he’s still leading !!!!!!!!!

      Hi Norm,

      Thanks for getting in touch.

Personally I don’t think your green alternatives blog is really the “right” place to discuss IM stuff. Of course you can use the principles you learn during the coaching to grow and promote that blog but if you are looking for somewhere to document your progress on what you have learned related to IM then a personal blog would be a better option.

      I hope this helps.

      David

    Hey David

Wow someone has blogged about me that is way cool thanks mate.By the way just done a third one tried to let it flow and smile a little more as per your advice I think its an improvement. I might go and delete the others.

    cheers David

    speak soon my friend.

    Marcus

    • David Walker July 18, 2009 at 8:24 pm

      Hi Marcus,

Your third video is a lot better. Just by smiling it at least looks like you are enjoying yourself and it is not just some big chore. IM is supposed to be fun, right?

I think you should keep the others, it’s all part of your progress. The old vides would make a great blog post in a few months time when you are really good at videos – a before and after!

  11. JT Martin July 19, 2009 at 10:36 pm

    Hi David,

I am making my rounds and visiting all the new students blogs. We have interacted in the forum, but this is the first time that I have been by your blog. I really like the way you have it set up.

Quick question, what plugin are you using where the “blog sponsers” are? Are those paid ads or are you just using a text widget with html code? I was thinking about renting space on my blog now that I am getting some decent traffic.

I think the post you made is a great idea. Sending people to the other students blogs will only bring more traffic back to you. I see that you are very active in the forum and on other students blogs. Keep up the good work and just keep doing what Alex says and you will do great with this.

    JT

    • David Walker July 19, 2009 at 10:43 pm

      Hi JT,

Thanks for your comment and it’s great to see you here!

The plugin I am using is the UBD Block Ad plugin. I am not sure if I am going to keep it yet but I agree with you that it would be better served in a blog which is getting the traffic volume.

I’ve really enjoyed looking at the blogs from the other students on the course and if nothing else, creating a post like this is easy content for me, haha!

I plan on being quite active in terms of commenting on other blogs and also helping in out in the forum where I can to build my presence and credibility.

    David,

Very, very awesome taking the time to not only read many students blogs and their posts, but
to also edify their content, recommendations and suggestions.

Great having you a part of this coaching group.

    Cheers,

    Rob

    • David Walker July 23, 2009 at 7:59 am

      Hey Rob,

Thanks for the kind words, hopefully I can contribute even more to the coaching group as time progresses!

I have really enjoyed reading the other students blogs and have left more comments in the past week or so than I have in the last 10 years of being online!

I am sure there is plenty more good stuff to come.
