A few days ago I questioned whether or not the internet marketing niche had become oversaturated. I came to the conclusion that it had not, despite seemingly being bombarded by the same offers week in, week out, by different marketers trying to promote them. Despite what you may think, the internet marketing niche is nowhere near saturation point and I have decided to return to this topic and provide a list-friendly seven reasons why this niche is exactly the one you should be getting involved in.
1. Where There’s Competition, There’s Money
I have been following the internet marketing niche on and office since around 1997 and every few years since then people have always questioned whether internet marketing, particularly the “make money online” niche, had reached saturation point. There will always be strong competition in this niche because there is a lot of money to be made in it. The very people who question whether it has reached a peak of overcrowding are the same people who are trying to make it in the niche themselves and are trying to put would-be competitors off.
Why do you think whenever a McDonald’s opens on one street it’s only a matter of time before a Burger King opens nearby, or vice versa? Do you think the possibility of people becoming sick of fast food on that street enters the CEOs mind for one second, or do they think “people on that street like burgers, let’s get a slice of the action?”
2. The Cream Will Always Rise to the Top
As noted above, the people who argue internet marketing has reached saturation point are those who are struggling in the niche themselves. While there is an abundance of average or mediocre marketers finding it hard to eke out a living online there is always room for a hungry, motivated, new kid on the block to come out of nowhere and rise to the top. Even the well known gurus had to start somewhere.
If you can provide a good product or service which is actually of benefit to people, then your reputation and indeed sales, will go through the roof.
3. Make Money Online is an Evergreen Niche
Some niches will never go out of fashion and the make money online niche is probably the biggest, apart from weight loss. People will always want to find ways of making a little extra cash the same way there will always be fat people who want to shed a few pounds. With the world’s economy the way it is at the moment, even more people will look to the internet to find a side income with regular, “bricks and mortar” jobs disappearing by the day.
To give you an idea of how ridiculously massive this niche is, one of the CPA networks I am a member of sends me an email every day updating me on the status of several “make money with Google” programs they promote. Their affiliates send them around 5,000 fresh leads every day. That’s to one program. On one network.
4. The Majority of People Are Not Aware of Internet Marketing
Despite the numbers mentioned above, the fact is most people who use the internet do not have a clue about internet marketing or will not considered the possibility of making money online yet. Why do I believe this? To put this into some perspective, a recent survey found that only eight percent of people interviewed in Times Square could correctly identify what a browser was.
Experienced internet users like myself take this basic stuff for granted but if this is the level of online-savvy the general public has at the moment, when seemingly everyone you know has access to the internet, then just imagine the potential customer-base when these people get up to speed a little more!
5. New Opportunities Arise Almost Daily
I don’t think I have ever seen as many new opportunities to make money online than I have over the past couple of years. Back in the old days you were restricted to perhaps ranking in the search engines, email marketing and later pay per click to drive traffic to your products but now you are literally spoilt for choice.
There’s article marketing, video marketing, viral marketing, affiliate marketing, social bookmarking, Myspace, Facebook, Twitter and numerous other methods to conquer and make a name for yourself in. There are so many sub-niches within the overall “make money online” niche that it’s ridiculous to even consider we have reached saturation point yet. The next big thing will be Google Wave and undoubtedly there will be new “experts” touting their products for it shortly after the service has been launched.
6. Pick a Topic – Any Topic
Let’s forget about making money online for a second. If you really believe you cannot make an impact in this area then why not consider any one of the other billion or so niche markets out there? Earlier we mentioned weight loss, but what about body building, golf, cars, video games, bird watching, stamp collecting or anything else?
Wherever there is a topic, there will be avid fans hungry for more information or products on it. What are you passionate and knowledgeable about? Thought of something? Good. Now, get out there and become the authority figure in that niche!
7. Huge Opportunities On Your Doorstep
If you want to become involved in the arena of online marketing, but don’t believe you have enough to offer to take on the big gurus head on, then why not think local? Anyone with internet-marketing savvy should be cleaning up in their town or city as the go-to guy or girl when it comes to helping local businesses improve their online efforts.
The opportunity is there to run a seminar for all the local businesses in your area to discuss their current website and marketing setup and for you to be the person to sort it out for them. Local businesses are generally very bad at using their websites as a lead generation tool and they will literally be forcing hard cash into your hand when you explain the benefits of being set up the right way!
Is that reason enough for why trying to make it as an internet marketer is not a futile exercise? We have just scratched the surface and there is plenty of room for an aspiring marketer who can bring something a little different to the table. Have I missed anything out? Great article that I luckily stumbled on through your tweets. It gave me boost of confidence while wondering this exact question recently. Thanks!
David, there is a LOT of truth in what you’re saying here. I know you’re going through some serious coaching right now, and I’m getting ready for Dean Holland’s coaching to start up.
Really, until everyone in the world has everything they want, there will always be money to be made on the internet. I’ve got my blog running mainly as a way to keep myself accountable to others out there, and I have other projects I’m working on in niches other than the ‘make money online’ crowd. I figure unless I have really MADE money online, I have no business selling people a blueprint for it.
There are a LOT of untapped niches out there – and remember, it’s not about doing it FIRST, it’s about doing it BEST! Just because there is someone else in your niche doesn’t mean you can’t make money – and you can do it WITHOUT TAKING AWAY FROM THEIR MONEY!
Anyways, great read – looking forward to reading more of your posts when I have time to!
Take it easy!

Hey David,
Thanks for pointing me to your article! Well said… we tend to think that everybody in the world already knows all the stuff that we have seen from IM gurus, but that’s really not true at all.
On the other hand, I think that there is HUGE potential in learning all the skills in internet marketing, and then taking our knowledge to a totally non-internet marketing niche, possibly even to offline businesses, and give them a big boost in acquiring new customers, or other ways of doing more business with the help of our IM skills.
Cheers,
Thomas
