I ran into the same problem with finding my domain name. I didn’t think I would thinking my name wouldn’t be taken, so I ended up taking .me and I like you had to get used to it but now I’m actually glad I have that because its unique and fits “me.” I learned that you just have to play around with words and things that relate to you. Its about developing your own identity. I’ve only been doing online marketing the past two months but the information I’ve learned is tremendous. Now I just have to really get my blogging down.

I think you should brand yourself as the expert figure in your niche, rather than just trying to promote your “website”. This is because YOU will then be seen as the expert figure and in time it could open doors for you in other niches.

A good example of this is Gary Vaynerchuk who branded himself as an expert figure in the wine industry but now makes a living as a business expert.

By branding yourself you keep your options open.

I don’t know about spending as much time commenting on other blogs as you spend on your own blog but it is definitely something every blogger should do.

The opinion of “if you build it they will come” is incorrect because you still need to get your name out there. Leaving regular comments on the most popular blogs in your niche is a great way to brand yourself and I would also suggest guest posting.

You make a good point about article marketing. If you come up with a great blog post, you can always write an abridged version to submit to some of the more popular article directories for further backlinks and traffic.

The curse of the common name strikes again – I know exactly how you feel!

Having something like “YourNameBlog.com” is perfect and will help your search engine rankings for your own name.

I think something like this is a lot better and easy to remember than putting in hyphens or even hyphens and a less common suffix.

Now start branding yourself around your new domain name!

Social media sites can help get your blog in front of new people. You should submit both your posts and other interesting posts you read to relevant social media sites to build a strong, diverse account.

Building a list can also help increase your traffic. When you create a useful new post, send an email to your list to tell them about it. In time your list will be an incredible source of traffic you can direct back to your blog whenever you want!
