Make Your Blog Count in 2010
I have already written down my New Year’s Resolutions for 2010 (cunningly disguised as a set of business goals to achieve by the time the year ends) and I know the direction I want to take this year.
If I am being totally honest, it’s about bloody time I started take my online business seriously and stopped coasting from one half-assed project to the next… but I know there will be some people reading this who make exactly the same mistakes I made for years.
I don’t want this to happen to you – go back and read my first post if you are visiting for the first time. Trust me, you don’t want this to be you when we are getting ready to ring in 2011!
I want my blog to go from strength to strength this year and I want that for you too, so here are my best tips for making your blog count in 2010.

Register Your Domain Name
If you are going to be taken seriously online and turn your online presence into an authority blog then you need to get the basics right.
Get into the right mindset starting from now. If you are going to become famous online, then at the very least you need your own domain name so you can brand yourself around it!
That means ditching your free Blogspot or WordPress.com account and investing in a memorable domain name. If you are in the internet marketing niche, try and get the .com version of your name. If that’s not available, get as close to it as possible, even if you need to use hyphens or a different suffix.
I have a common name (around 23 million competing web pages in Google for David Walker) but the .tv suffix was still available with .com, .net, .co.uk etc. already taken so I had to make do with that.
However, I have got used to it and now actually quite like it – ALL of my personal branding in 2010 is going to be focused around DavidWalker.tv. You will be seeing a LOT of me in the next 12 months.
If you are involved in a different niche, such as dog training, register a domain name with your most important keywords in them to help with branding and search engine optimization. You can then brand yourself as an expert figure within that niche from the start.
Look, I know we are in a recession, but there is no excuse to use free blog services if you are serious about running your blog as a business – start treating your blog like a serious business!
You can register your domain name with GoDaddy for around $10 and a more than satisfactory hosting package from Hostgator for less than $5 a month.
You’d spend more than that on coffee breaks or a couple of beers in the bar at the end of your working week, so don’t tell me you cannot afford it!

Build Your Email List
One of the BIGGEST mistakes I ever made was NOT building my email list sooner.
Even when I was making a ton of money online I wasn’t building my list along the way – if I did, I could have made 10 times the money. That’s a real sickener.
Start building your list as soon as your blog is online, you can never start it soon enough!
If you take just one tip from me in the whole of 2010 then it’s this – your blog alone will not make you that much money. It’s the subscriber list you build from that blog which will earn you a substantial income.
OK, so you may be able to generate a few hundred dollars per month from advertising banners and Google Adsense, but that’s not going to happen until you are established and even then that amount of money is chicken feed.
Think about it this way. Every subscriber on your email list is worth, on average, $1 per month to you.
I thought that may get your attention. That means as long as you keep building your list, your income will increase month on month and will far outweigh what you can earn from blog advertising (incidently how much advertising do you see on my blog? You can be sure as hell I am making money from it, though!)
The mailing list provider I use is Aweber. I have had an account with them for several years now even though I only started using them properly last June when I started this blog.
For the sake of $1 you can set up a trial account and then it’s a small monthly subscription to enable you to send out unlimited autoresponder messages, broadcasts and RSS newsletters.
If you cannot make this pay for itself, then perhaps you shouldn’t think about quitting your day job!

You Have a Blog – Now Actually Post On It!
The key to succeeding with your blog is to decide on a posting frequency from the very beginning and stick to it!
In your very first post, tell your story to position yourself as an expert and inform your readers how regularly you are going to post. That way, you keep yourself accountable to other people and you will be under a favourable amount of pressure to stick to your promise.
I have been a bit slack myself with posting to my blog but 2010 is the year people will take notice of it. I wrote in my resolutions post that I’ll write two new posts per week so that the content remains fresh.
The worst thing you can do with a new blog is go at it like a bat out of hell for the first few weeks, posting daily until you run out steam and stop posting altogether.
Let’s make this clear – you are NOT going to become an overnight sensation. It took even the really famous bloggers around a year of consistent posting before they started making any sort of income so just relax.
If you are passionate about the niche you are blogging about then you will be able to come up with some great content – you don’t need to post everything all at once! Just be consistent in your posting and work on other areas of your business at the same time, such as building your list and product creation.

Build Relationships & Personal Branding
Blogging has and always will be about forging relationships between both your readers and other bloggers in your niche.
No matter how great your content is, people are not just going to “find you”, think you are wonderful and buy anything you shove in front of them. There is a little more work involved.
Make sure you enter your niche as an expert from the very beginning. This will save a lot of time and encourage people to want to get to know, like and trust you rather than just view you as merely more noise in a crowded marketplace.
Start branding yourself on other people’s blogs by leaving comments on their blog posts (you can leave me a comment below!) but make sure they are thoughtful and add value to the conversation – none of your “great post – keep it up” type drivel please. This will drive traffic back to your blog and when people comment on your posts, be sure to leave an appreciative reply.
Once you pick up a bit of steam and really enjoy posting new content on your blog you can start offering to write guest posts for other people’s blogs. This will increase your credibility, open you up to a whole new audience and add valuable subscribers to your mailing list!

Brand Yourself on Social Media Websites
It’s also important to secure as many “outposts” as you can with your own personal brand in order to reinforce it and drive traffic. By “outposts”, I mean social media websites – the hugely popular and highly trafficked websites almost everyone has an account at.
To give you some ideas, I am branded at the following places among numerous others:
- Facebook personal page (and now Fan Page too!)
- Twitter account
- Youtube account
- Flickr account
- Sphinn account
- Warrior Forum profile
If you haven’t done so already, brand yourself on all of the major social media websites and make sure you link back to your blog on each one. Try to use the same photograph and the same information where possible to so you can reinforce your brand as much as possible.
The year has only just begun and it is absolutely the right time for you to start blogging and reinvent yourself as an authority figure in your niche. You can get your blog up and running in just a few minutes, so don’t put it off until tomorrow.
Tell me what you intend to do in 2010 to make your blog count in the comments below!

Having your own domain is a no-brainer. If someone can’t invest $100 a year on a domain and hosting then there’s no reason why anyone would believe in him. Have to spend a little just to be in the running to earn income.
Bunch of great tips! 2010 is going to be a big year on the web and I have a feeling a lot more people are going to jump into.
Cheers to having an awesome blogging year!
Justin Wright´s last blog ..How To Have A Kick Ass 2010
Hi David
I have become used to seeing your name and always associate it with .tv; probably because it is unusual it does stand out.
One thing that still amazes me with some blogs – they are not building a subscriber list. In fact I still come across people who admit they haven’t started building their own list and they have been online for quite some time.
As it is so easy to add a name and email submit form to a blog (as you mention in your free book), no-one has any excuse not to do so.
Have a great year,
John

Hi John,
I was one of those people who did not build a list while running a few successful ventures online. It’s my biggest mistake and I wish I had started building a list years ago – I would be in a much different situation now if I did!
I am glad you found the ebook useful and that you are doing things the ‘right’ way – you will reap the rewards sooner rather than later!
David
And I always thought you took .tv for a reason since it stands out and you’re a video person
The biggest thing anyone should take away from your great post is list building. Focusing on list building will set you free. If you don’t 2010 will look very much like 2009 for you.
I wish everyone a kick ass year,
Gil

Hi Gil,
There’s that phrase again – “list building”
I hope any newcomers reading this take it on board and start building their list!
Not sure why you think I am a video person? I tried to avoid using it for as long as possible but I know how important it is now so will be using it a lot more in 2010.
David
Thanks for the great tips, I started a blog but am having trouble with traffic. I guess I have to start signing up for the social media sites you mentioned as well as any more i can. I agree you must build a list. thanks again. Now lets rock 2010.

Hi Tim,
Social media sites can help get your blog in front of new people. You should submit both your posts and other interesting posts you read to relevant social media sites to build a strong, diverse account.
Building a list can also help increase your traffic. When you create a useful new post, send an email to your list to tell them about it. In time your list will be an incredible source of traffic you can direct back to your blog whenever you want!
David
Hi David
I am thinking of doing my own blog with my own name as the domain name but all I can get is my name with the word blog after my name..what are your thoughts on this ??
Regards
David
Hi David,
The curse of the common name strikes again – I know exactly how you feel!
Having something like “YourNameBlog.com” is perfect and will help your search engine rankings for your own name.
I think something like this is a lot better and easy to remember than putting in hyphens or even hyphens and a less common suffix.
Now start branding yourself around your new domain name!
David
Hey David,
I ran into the same problem with finding my domain name. I didn’t think I would thinking my name wouldn’t be taken, so I ended up taking .me and I like you had to get used to it but now I’m actually glad I have that because its unique and fits “me.” I learned that you just have to play around with words and things that relate to you. Its about developing your own identity. I’ve only been doing online marketing the past two months but the information I’ve learned is tremendous. Now I just have to really get my blogging down.
Thanks for the valuable information!

I strongly agree with everything that you have said but, I would like to make the following suggestions. You should spend nearly as much time commenting on other blogs and forums in you niche as you do your own blog. You have to get your name out there. This is great for branding and back-links. In addition, if it is worthy of writing a post, then it is likely that is also worth putting an article out. This is a great way to brand yourself as an expert.
Hi Stan,
I don’t know about spending as much time commenting on other blogs as you spend on your own blog but it is definitely something every blogger should do.
The opinion of “if you build it they will come” is incorrect because you still need to get your name out there. Leaving regular comments on the most popular blogs in your niche is a great way to brand yourself and I would also suggest guest posting.
You make a good point about article marketing. If you come up with a great blog post, you can always write an abridged version to submit to some of the more popular article directories for further backlinks and traffic.
David
I’ve been following you for awhile now David. You are one of the few emails I allow these days.
Anyways, do you think it is detrimental not to brand your name? I have a business site and don’t know if I exactly want to personalize it too much – I’m just a little torn.
I have a weight loss blog but don’t look like Halle Barry, but am big into fitness and motivating others on their wellness journey, etc.
Just wondering what you think.
Cheers!
Terri
Terri´s last blog ..Happy New Year!
Hi Terri,
Thank you for your kind words and I am glad you find some value in my content!
I think you should brand yourself as the expert figure in your niche, rather than just trying to promote your “website”. This is because YOU will then be seen as the expert figure and in time it could open doors for you in other niches.
A good example of this is Gary Vaynerchuk who branded himself as an expert figure in the wine industry but now makes a living as a business expert.
By branding yourself you keep your options open.
David
I’m still in the process of establishing my brand. I did not know that it was this hard, but I wont give up. This year I will climb my way to the top. Thanks for the additional information you have provided here.
hi david
as a newbie on the web i need all the advise i can have
and i enjoy reading your e.mails and blog.
I have A blog of my own on blogger and i must admit its not very
good.SO I WOULD BE GREATFULL FOR A LITTLE HELP OFF SOMEONE.
THANKS PHILLIP.
Hi Phillip,
The first thing I recommend is to actually read and implement what I discuss in my free report. If you are on my email list then you must have downloaded it?
The info in the report will get you on the right track.
David
Hey David,
I was just on Skype and saw a message from you about the new look of your blog. I think it’s nicely done. Looks very professional. In fact I’ve already forgotten what the old site looked like. LOL
In this post you put emphasis on the importance of building a list. I couldn’t agree more, in fact that’s what I’ll be focusing on this year.
You asked us to comment here about what we plan to do in 2010 to make our blog count but instead I wrote down the goals I posted on my blog. It’s not a complete list but my main goals.
1. My list is just over 1,000 subscribers now and I’d like to hit 10,000 subscribers by year end. I’m aiming high.
2. My traffic has always been in spurts so I’d like to have a substantial increase in steady traffic to my blog.
3. I’m really going out on a limb here as I haven’t created my first product yet. But this year I’d like to create one new product each quarter.
4. Sometimes I go through long stretches without posting to my blog so this year’s goal is to write one post a week (I already screwed this up).
Good Luck in 2010 David.
