How I Will Increase Traffic to My Blog

Last night’s coaching webinar with Alex Jeffreys was all about driving targeted traffic to your blog. Traffic, or visitors as people who arrived at your website used to be referred to before the internet became trendy, is the lifeblood of any online business. If nobody visits your website then there is no interaction, no relationships are formed and ultimately no sales are made. Without visitors to read what you are putting out there, a blog may as well not exist.

Alex is keen to see everyone who is participating on his coaching program to increase the traffic to their blog and to make it more interesting, he is offering a $1,000 bounty to the student who accumulates the most traffic across a two-week period.

Before getting into how I am going to promote my blog, I want to show you where I am at today in terms of traffic. At the start of July, 2009 you can see my traffic numbers were not that great:

Apart from a blip on 15 July where I had a huge spike of traffic, I had been attracting less than 100 unique visitors every day to my blog.

But, the second half of the month saw an improvement and the last 10 days have all seen well over 100 unique visitors per day. At the time of writing this post I have had 29 visitors, but I see no reason why I won’t get over the 100 mark again today.

So, where is the traffic coming from? One word – Twitter. As you can see below Twitter is sending me around close to 50% of all the visitors who come to my blog.

I am getting a lot of “direct traffic” which I assume is people typing my url straight into the address bar of their web browser and it’s no surprise a percentage of traffic is coming from the Alex Jeffreys’ coaching forum, where I am quite active.

What is encouraging, however, is I am now getting search engine traffic, notably for people searching specifically for my name and this blog. This wasn’t happening at the start of July so my efforts so far to get my brand recognised are having at least a small, positive effect.

I don’t think I have made a bad start to this blog but this is really only the beginning. At the end of the two week competition period I want to at least double the number of daily visitors who come to my blog, between 200-300 uniques.

One of the rules in the competition is I have to write about how I am driving the traffic to my blog. To start off this series of traffic related posts, here are 10 methods I will use to promote my blog over the next fortnight and beyond:

  • Twitter. So far, Twitter is my main source of traffic so I will try and get even more from it. I will tweet some of my better, more “timeless” blog posts at regular intervals to try and pick up some new visitors but will have to be careful I don’t overdo it.
  • Blog Commenting. This has proved successful so far in getting traffic to my blog and I have found commenting on other people’s blogs also sees the number of comments I get here increase dramatically. I will continue to comment on other coaching student’s blogs regularly but also widen my net further and comment on some of the more popular internet marketing blogs out there.
  • Forums. The coaching forum has provided me with plenty of traffic as more and more students get to grips with their blogs and become active in the community. I will continue to post there as much as I can to help people out but I will also turn my attention to the Warrior Forum which is a huge community of both up-and-coming and more experienced internet marketers. If I can add value there thenm I should see a steady flow of traffic arriving at my blog.
  • Social Bookmarking. This is something I have experienced success with in the past but have not really done it yet with this blog. I will submit my better posts to some of the bookmarking sites like Stumbleupon and Delicious and hope they strike a chord with the people who use them. If one of my blog posts takes off, I could get tens of thousands of unique visitors as it goes viral.
  • Podcasting. This is something quite new to me but I have enjoyed doing it so far. I will produce regular, short podcast updates of what I am doing on Audio Boo and mention my blog within my recordings. The website may not drive a huge amount of traffic but hey, if it’s good enough for Tony Blackburn, then it’s good enough for me! I also want to get together on Skype with other students on the course for a weekly “brainstorming” session which can be recorded and submitted to other podcasting websites.
  • Video. This is something I know I have to do more of but at the moment I am guilty of procrastination. I need to start producing videos and syndicating them around the various hubs, such as Youtube. Not only will the videos generate traffic but also valuable backlinks which will help my search engine rankings.
  • Search Engine Optimisation. Most of the above activities will see my rankings in the search engines improve and I just need to keep adding quality content to this blog to make it more of an “authority” site. At the moment, I do not show up for my name “David Walker” until page three of Google UK and that needs to improve especially as some traffic has started trickling through via a “David Walker” search term.
  • JV Giveaways. I have started experimenting with JV Giveaways and it has already had a positive effect on growing my mailing list. When someone joins my list and downloads my ebook, they should find their way to my blog via the links contained within in.
  • Facebook. I am not really doing a lot in terms of promotion with Facebook, but I have added a link to my blog on my profile page and will link out to my latest blog post on my status updates. The traffic numbers will not be huge but every little helps. In time, as my brand grows and when I feel it is justifiable, I will create a “fan page” for my blog on there which should generate further buzz and traffic.
  • My Email List. I have worked hard on attracting people to my mailing list and they are all interested in what I have to say. I can create an automated RSS Newsletter to send out to them every time a new post appears on the blog or after a set number of new posts have gone live. This kind of repeat custom will drive a lot of traffic back to my blog over time as my list gets bigger.

I am going to give this a real go over the next couple of weeks because while it would be nice to win the $1,000 it is also a good incentive to step the traffic promotion efforts up a notch and get even more people aware of what I am trying to achieve here.

If anyone has additional methods they are going to use to promote their blogs or has any improvements on what I have written about here, please leave your comments below!

Sound’s like a plan Dave!
I am also looking at using some of these methods, but don’t forget to ping your blogs also using pingomatic and pingoat.

Hi Rob,

Nice list, David. I’m doing the majority of what you’ve listed but not seeing near the numbers. One thing of course is that you have 45K Twitter followers to my 3.5K, 1.5K for my IM one, so that accounts for a chunk. I also need to start working Facebook more but other things need my attention also. It;s kind of a C+ at the moment.

Cheers,
Rod

Hi Rod,

I don’t think I get that much traffic from Twitter in proportion to my following size but at the moment about 50% of my traffic comes from Twitter so I can’t really complain.

I am not really using Facebook much, I just have my blog linked into my profile but when the blog grows a bit more I will probably create a Fan Page to try and leverage it a bit more.

Hi Dave

You are killing it with the traffic, great job by Alex last knight one day soon I’ll be there with you guys right now i’m still putting together Alex’s 21 videos I really want to get that together before I start anything else ,I got a plan I want to work it, but I will be in touch, JT Martin is really doing a good job on giveaways, just downloaded his book let you know how it is if you dont already know.

Thanks for commenting, well any business is about your mindset, but that easier said than done we all want to think we’re the Donald Trump, but we have to go through our bumps and bruises before we get there, so when I see a guy like Alex doing this stuff it just let’s me know that I’m on the right track. I put up a blog a few months back,it stinks I could have made it better but I wasnt in the right mindset I got a lot of stuff floating around the web but wasnt in the right mind frame to link it all together, it’s easy to say I didnt have the right mentor which I probably didnt but it’s not up to my mentor it’s up to me to get off my duff and put in the work, if I dont know the answer I better find somebody who does, that’s why I love Alex’s class and the forum because I can go to any of the guys in that forum and get help and believe me a few people have helped me in the last couple of weeks. So stay in the right mindset and we’ll get this done.

Hi Alexis,

I would recommend you go through Alex’s 21 videos as that will give you a lot of the groundwork you need if you are quite new to blogging and internet marketing.

So far it has been quite easy to get the traffic levels to where they are but the next challenge is going to be doubling the traffic numbers I am getting now!

I plan to use JV Giveaways a lot and I have downloaded JT’s book.

Hi David,

WOW! And I thought I had ideas. You look like a man on a mission, but I will try and see how it goes. One thing I have also noticed is that both my blog and my PPP are seeing traffic from the search engines, so there’s hope for me yet.

I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on your blog, it’s a wealth of useful information and I can see why you are getting traffic.

Cheers

Hi Stewart,

If both your blog and PPP are already getting search engine traffic then that is awesome! I am just starting to get some search engine traffic for my name so it’s nice to see my brand awareness is growing by the day!

You are welcome here any time and please leave me comments so I can improve the blog even more!

Hi David,

That is impressive Traffic Stats, mine is about a third of yours….in the first part of the month.

Like you, I get alot of traffic from Twitter, and I only post occasionally, so I will step that up this week.

My goal is to improve my keywords for my blog with some keyword research, but I wll also be doing all of the above.

Thanks David.

Talk soon

Good luck to you as well. I would like to think I have a chance of winning but I don’t know how my numbers stack up against other students so I will just have to wait and see!

Great inspiration my mate youve provided that if you do work at driving traffic you get results .Ive found an issue with my blog with the titles not being specific enough (trying to be funny) .So i will work on my keywords.

Hi Richard,

I need to work on some of my titles as well. For example “Why I Don’t Want to be the Assholt at the Party” is a great title, but a bit meaningless in search engine terms so I will try and optimise my titles and keywords better from now on.

Hi Dave,
I am not going to ask how are you doing. Ha ha :-) ) Seems you are doing just fine and your traffic is also on the up. You certainly have a great plan of attack there!! I am still looking to get a little traffic!! I am sure things will improve as I work at it – Alex gave us some great info on Thurs last week. Now all we have to do is put it into practice. All the best with the competition.

My traffic is improving but it is going to take a lot of work to step it up from where it is now. If you use some of the techniques outlined here then your own traffic should improve rapidly.

Good luck as well in the competition.

Best of all these are things that everyone can do so thanks for putting them up.

Hello David

yes i would agree that twitter is a great way of getting traffic to a website and so many different way’s you can promote ie Blogs, lead capture pages , clickbank products and twitter is growing week by week,
People need to build there list on twitter, and there is amazing automatic twitter builder coming out @ the start of November, ive been one lucky ones to test drive this and been getting over 1000 followers automatically with automatic posting. i will let you know when its out.

I have been picking up traffic on emailsafelist and other sites like this as well.

anyway great blog and keep up the good work

Thanks

David-

Just wanted to let you know I am still following along. It is pretty interesting to read a blog from the very first post in just a few days.

I have only done this a few times before on other blogs, since it take so long. Regarding Twitter, I still do not see the attraction. I get most of my traffic on a fairly new blog from social networking sites, but find that it is poor traffic.

I would prefer to get more traffic from organic search, but that is hard to do on your name in the beginning.

Hi Evan,

I am glad you are taking such a keen interest in my blog!

You are right, by and large Twitter and social networking traffic is untargeted. However, if you submit internet marketing / social media related posts to Sphinn that will drive some qualified traffic to your blog.

My long term goal is to get more organic search traffic but it is not that important in the short term. You should notice your search engine traffic improves month on month as you add content to your blog and give searchers more pages in which to find you.
