Five Steps to a Successful Blog
I wrote a post on how to make your blog count but I still don’t think enough people “get” what is required to build and maintain an authority blog in your chosen niche.
I really believe anybody can have a successful blog. Let’s not forget that even the famous bloggers started off with nothing but an empty website and a far-off dream.
Here I want to summarise what I believe to be the five steps you need to follow if you want your blog to become successful and to make it clear that online fame, wealth and success does not happen overnight!

(adapted from a photograph by Annie Mole)
1. Get It Going!
The very first thing you need to do is to get your blog online so stop procrastinating and get started now!
Remember, you don’t need to get it “right”, just get it going and start building your online presence.
I want you to move away from the free blog hosting options, like Wordpress.com and Blogspot. If you are to be taken seriously online at the very least you need a blog which has your own domain name (get a .com for around $10 from GoDaddy) and hosting (Hostgator can provide this for less than $5 a month).
Whatever niche you are operating in, you need to explain why people should listen to you. Brand yourself as the expert in your niche in your very first post by telling your story.
As the old saying goes, start as you mean to go on.

2. Establish Your Blog
Once you have completed your first post the next stage is to keep posting and at regular times!
You should make it clear to your readers how often you are going to post new content and then do your best to stick to it!
Write some pillar articles which are usually in a tutorial format and aimed at teaching something valuable to your readers. These posts are generally longer than your usual “what I had for lunch today” type content and are filled with practical advice other people charge money for.
You should also set up a mailing list as soon as possible because the money will come via the relationship you build with those people on your list – in time, lots of them! I use Aweber to handle this and I cannot stress how vital it is to your long term business to get it set up.
To entice people to add their name and email address to the opt in form on your blog, you need to offer them an ethical bribe – usually a free report, video or audio interview.
Clue: create something based around your pillar content and make sure you read my post on product creation.
This product doesn’t have to be earth shattering, just valuable enough so your prospects will be happy they managed to get some great content for free.
I should, at this point, tell you that you won’t be getting inundated with visitors during the early months of your blog and you will make next to no money.
This is where most people give up.
But not you, right?

3. Generate Traffic
During the early stages of your blog’s life you may start getting a handful of visitors and comments to each post if you have done any sort of promotion, e.g.
- Commenting on other people’s blogs
- Hawking your blog around on Twitter and Facebook
- Submitting your posts to social media websites
- Some of your posts may generate search engine traffic
But, now you want to take your blog to the next level and that means more traffic.
As the quality content on your blog increases, you are now in a position to guest post on other authoritative blogs in your niche.
It doesn’t matter if you are not “well known” because you have set your stall out as an expert (your first post, remember?) and the person whose blog you want to guest post on will see the calibre of your content through the pillar articles you have already written.
You have given yourself instant expert status and are in a position to open yourself up to a new audience through other people’s blogs!
Regular guest posting can generate a snowball effect to your traffic because not only will you obviously get the additional visitors from your guest post, but more people will:
- Link to your blog posts from their blogs
- Submit and bookmark your content on social media websites
- Re-tweet your content so it spread across Twitter like a virus!
… all resulting in even more visitors arriving at your blog!

4. Make Money!
It has taken you a few months but hopefully it has been an enjoyable learning experience for you and you should now have what can be described as a successful blog.
If you have followed the first three steps then you should also notice an increase, month on month, in your income.
Remember that mailing list we set up in point number two? After several months it should now be growing into the thousands.
You can of course drive those people back to your blog by emailing them when you have posted new content on your blog but you can also pitch products, training courses etc. to them, either your own or as an affiliate.
As your readership and email list grows each month, so should your earnings.
The bulk of your earnings will come via your mailing list but you can also make additional income selling advertising space on your blog or using affiliate banners.

5. To Infinity & Beyond…
The sky really is the limit as far as your blog goes.
It can grow from nothing into a powerful, authority hub and make you famous online… but only if you are willing to put the time and effort in.
If you are one of the few who have the drive to get to the stage where your blog earns a substantial income then you may be pleased to know you do not have to plough so much time and effort into it forever.
Your blog should reach a stage where growth is self-perpetuating:
- You have thousands of people on your list you can drive to new blog posts
- People talk about you constantly on social media websites
- People talk about you on their own blogs
- Your blog ranks prominently in the search engines for key terms in your niche
Of course you need to keep your blog updated with fresh content, but it’s not as important now as it was when you were first starting out. Plus, people will email you, begging you to publish their guest posts – free content for you!
With your blog constantly generating fresh leads for your business you can concentrate on even more lucrative avenues, such as:
- Guest speaking
- Hosting seminars and workshops
- High end coaching and mentoring
- Book deals
The incredible thing is -
this can happen for anyone who has the passion for their niche and a will to succeed.
It all begins with your first post so start your blog NOW – what is stopping you from having a successful blog apart from yourself?

Hi David,
Thank you so much for sharing this.
I like especially about writing of “pillar articles”
in tutorial format. That is most probably a good
advice I will follow.
Thanks Again!

Anyone can start a blog but only the truly dedicated will be successful. Out of the 20k blogs per day, I’d be that 10k are abandoned in less than a month and 18k are ditched in six months.
Hi Gabe,
I agree. To become successful at blogging it takes a lot of dedication and hard work but that’s why DavidWalker.tv exists, to help other people achieve that success!
David
Great post, I had to print it out to really let it sink in and I absolutely agree with Gabe – easily 1/2 are abandoned….they went to Google Trends and got something started – but I think the motivation wears off quick which is why I think it is SO IMPORTANT to blog about something that you are truly passionate about or know the investment of time will give you some type of ROI of your time.
Cheers,
Terri
Hi Terri,
I am a firm believer that you need to be passionate about a topic if you are to blog successfully about it, otherwise where is the motivation?
Sure, you can make a lot of money blogging about stuff you have zero interest in, but that money does not come about straight away so it is your passion which will drive you through the difficult start up phase where you get few visitors and even less financial rewards!
David
Hey Dave, My blog is rather successful with many articles on the first page of google and others, but with it being on wordpress free has its drawbacks and I will be re-organizing real soon. I love your gameplan, sounds so simple and ofcourse it is! Thanks for the great read, Tim
Hi David – good advice. I’ve partially developed many blogs and enjoy watching them grow. I’m not making a lot of money yet but I believe I will when I can clear my plate and really focus on the writing. Until then, it’s a great practice and I love the process.
cheers,
Susanna Jade
Hi Susanna,
Sure is fun, huh?
David
Hi David,
The steps you layed out sound pretty good. I’ve only been blogging the last few months so I’m new at it. Naturally, I continue to look for ways to improve and do things better. There are still some steps I need to complete but I’m working on it. Thanks for your help.
Hi David,
I thought your latest blog post was really cool. (Especially the last part of it. That was very funny!
Thank you David,
As a new comer to the blogging scene, it seems that there is so much to learn! And your advice about about getting it going and getting started is so true.
It has taken me 3 years to get on-line because I felt “I didn’t know enough.” When is enough enough anyway? I have learnt more in these last few weeks since establishing a blog, than in the entire last 3 years. Why? Because it’s now real and I need “to do” and often, or sink.
Thanks for sharing David,
Regards,
Constantine
Hi dear David. Thank YOU very much for your 5-step PLAN to success.
It sounds great. What do I have that YOU recommend? I have 2 WORD-
Press Blogs (YOU recommended). I have domain names and hosting from
GODADDY, I subscribed to AWEBER but for a while I do not know how to use it. I subscribed to the TWITTER and related to it TWEETOLLOWER. Creating the posts for my blogs and the content is
one of the most difficult tasks in my nearest Future. I’ll try to follow your PLAN. I am sure everything will be all right as I have YOU as a mentor David ,an expert in blogging and Internet Mareke-
ting. Thank YOU, David for your advise and assistance,
Lyudmila
Hi David, you have been clear and empowering. I have continually, despite the recommendation to use wordpress, that having my own unique blog with my own domain name would be advisable. Somehow, I feel there must a catch in these free things as we all know. Having said this, I must say I believe is ecellent designs at affordable costs – and I command very limited financial resources. Do you have a great but considerate designer to recommend?
Hi Kofi,
I wrote about who designed my blog in a previous post.
I hope this helps.
David
I agree pillar articles will get the search engines to publish your articles/site.
I am curious if you just create a blog to just market a product much like a html site without intention of keeping content creation going is it abandoned? If it still creates a stream of income it is still successful.
I am aware of many methods of creating backlinks, but which ones will create 80% of the traffic? Not all backlinks are created equal.
Hi Leslie,
My blog is where people get know me better and I will recommend certain products on here in the form of blog posts.
However, as far as my own specific products goes, they will have their own dedicated website.
Backlinks are a long term process. Every backlink will help you improve your long term search engine positions but if you are a looking for a backlink which will give you a shot of instant traffic, then I would look at social bookmarking or writing a guest post for someone else’s blog.
David
Hi David
Great post and i agree set an action plan and stick to it.
Creating new content can be the biggest problem, so why not use the info from all the emails we get, example: I have been promoting free memberships that will benefit my readers and of course there is always an upgrade version to the membership, that could start you earning from the posts.
Any way thanks for the kick up the back side, i`m going to put my email subscribe box on my blog this week.
Great post Dave,
I appreciate your honesty by letting people understand that this is not a get rich quick scheme. I think the Guru’s who imply or outright claim that there is some magic formula that guarantees success are doing people a disservice by creating unrealistic expectations.
Your post really explains the work involved and what people can expect if they actually do the work.
Much success on your trip.
Thanks David,
A well set out, useful and informative article, well written and easy to follow.

Hey David…
I am impressed with how nice and clean this blog looks.
You are a real professional blogger. And of course, it constitutes the best example for anybody looking to start a blog.
I concur that the best platform nowadays is WordPress, both for the multitude of themes and plugins that may help customizing it easily, but especially for the SEO help it offers to the newcomers and savvy marketers alike.
Regarding the blogging itself, there is one piece of advice I’d like to offer to the fellow readers of your blog.
Never, ever, give up!
To be able to do that, start blogging about a passion that you have. The ‘craziest’ the better.
You see, there is no such thing as “there is no one else passionate about the same things as I am” – there are always others.
Blogging about your passion will bring you back organic traffic, in time, due even to the fact that you’d be using very specific jargon terms in your text.
Of course there are many aspects of SEO and the best piece of advice I could give someone when they start blogging is to choose wisely their domain name (the virtual real estate they will own.)
Guys/Gals, no matter what somebody else may have told you, taking a domain name like SomeName.com (it’s made up) where Some Name would be your own name… will do no good, unless you’re someone like a cinema star or someone already established as a ‘known-by-everybody’ expert in your niche…
BUT
something like HowToCheatAtPoker.com can make a HUGE difference!
Excellent work David, congrats! You have my respect.

PS
I’ll go now to bookmark this post, to drive even more traffic to it and consequently to have more people read your content and benefit from your advice.
Hi David,
Thanks for setting out a clear plan on how to establish a blog.
I’ve had mine for a while now and have done some of the steps but really need to go back and create some pillar articles and maybe redevelop it.
Enjoy you trip to Vega, and see you next month!
Thanks
Keith
P.S. I like the new look of your blog.

Hey David,
I agree with what you said about how “you don’t need to get it “right”, just get it going”. So many people try to get things perfect before they make it live. If you wait until you get your blog perfect before you make it live on the Internet you will never have a blog. There’s no such thing as perfect. Just get it up and running and you can tweak it later.

Hey Dave,
Great post! Everyone starts somewhere and the key is to just get off the fence and get started! Then you can test and revise as you go along and that’s how you find out what works best for you and what doesn’t. Also stay focused and be consistent!
See ya soon,
Sonia

Hi David, thanks for your pointers, I do find them useful. Analysis paralysis sets in easy with internet work.. my advice to people is to remember the 80/20 rule.
