Seagulls are invading the Internet Marketing industry!

Well, not exactly.

I’m not suggesting that oversized coastal birds have swapped the beach for the Internet cafe…

Preferring to snatch bundles of cash than bags of chips from unsuspecting punters…

It’s just I’m seeing a “seagull attitude” from a minority of customers recently.

Let me explain:

Yesterday, I launched On Demand Backlinks: Power Posts as an insanely low price, high value Warrior Special Offer (WSO).

For the sub $10 it cost to purchase, the customer received 256 spreadsheets filled with thousands of individual blog posts with existing Pagerank (PR) to comment on and build do-follow backlinks.

Sounds good so far?

It was.

But, perhaps I was misguided in trying to add even more “value” (I’m really starting to get sick of that marketing phrase) to the WSO because…

I thought I was being quite generous offering this added extra…

As it took a couple of hours work checking the Pagerank of each blog and reorganising them to create a new edition.

However, I received a few complaints.

Some believed they should receive the updated On Demand Backlinks for free as they were an “existing customer” and should not have to purchase the Power Posts product to get their hands on it…

Even though I didn’t sell that product with any promise or inclusion of version updates.

I mean, you don’t get a free ticket to watch a movie sequel just because you paid to watch the first one?

Just like a seagull that snatches a donut out of your hand, it’s this sort of freebie and entitlement mindset that pisses me off about the Internet Marketing industry.

What irks me the most about this is I wouldn’t have had any complaints at all if I didn’t offer the bonus.

If I didn’t make the extra effort, didn’t go that extra mile to offer some additional “value”, not a single keystroke would have been tapped in anger.

Fortunately, the majority of my customers are a savvy bunch and appreciated the mountain of rank-boosting help they were getting for the sake of a few bucks.

As an Internet Marketer, you’ve probably heard how “taking action” is the key to success.

It’s not.

If you keep beating the action taking drum, you are going to fail quite spectacularly.

No matter how organised and productive you are, you still cannot do everything you have to do.

Dessert can wait.

Ranking your website prominently for a competitive, but very lucrative keyword is a particularly foul-tasting frog…

But absolutely necessary and best eaten in as few bites as you can.

I’ve written a ton about how to get more done over the past few months.

But, it still won’t change the fact we will never find enough hours in the day to do everything we want…

An interesting approach to dealing with this is the notion of opportunity cost, more commonly associated with economics.

Don’t worry – I won’t get into this too deeply!

Opportunity cost simply refers to whether your time or money could be better spent on something else.

Let’s take trying to rank your blog or website in Google as an example.

You could spend your time on the following link building tactics with no guarantee of a first page ranking:

• An entire week writing one guest post to publish on an authority blog.
• Several hours per day cranking out articles to submit to directories.
• Several hours per day commenting on blog posts.
• Several hours per day creating “profile” links on forums and online communities.
• Bookmarking your pages on hundreds of different social websites.

Value for money is not the issue here…

But value for time will make or break your business.

Only a tiny percentage of those who try to make money online actually achieve it…

With a smaller percentage still able to make a full-time living from their online efforts.

Most go broke or lose interest and quit before their websites rank well.

Don’t let this happen to you.

One of the best uses of your time to rank your website is to build your own private blog network…

A handful of high pagerank links from your own authority blogs to your main “money site” will do more to rank you well than hundreds, even thousands of low quality links that take months to build.

I believe anybody can potentially make money online…

It’s just the 95 percent of those who fail to do so are not cut out for it.

The failures guzzle down helping after helping of bull shit like it was fillet steak…

Believing instant riches are just a few mouse clicks or one cobbled-together software installation away.

Or, they waste too much time on non-profitable activities and quit, blaming bad luck for their downfall.

They give up due to being burned once too often, or run out of time, money and patience, declaring making money on the Internet is nothing but a pipe dream.

Believe me, some of the most successful Internet Marketers are nothing special.

If the Internet didn’t exist, I’d even go as far to say they’d be earning a pittance in some menial job…

Living from paycheck to paycheck.

I should know, I was one of those guys too.

But, the Internet does exist and gives us “normal” people, us “average Joes” a chance at earning extraordinary incomes.

The truth is, anybody can be taught a formula that rakes in the cash.

Don’t believe me?

This stuff has even been proven.

In the book How to Be a Star at Work by Robert E. Kelly, the author discussed a study whereby employers “tested” both star performers and the clock watchers who just turned up for their salary.

The results showed no measurable difference between the two types of employee, meaning anybody can learn what is required to become a “star”…

This applies as much to the online world as it does offline.

When you know what you are doing, making money online is so, so easy.

For example, in the first 10 days of November one of my income streams earned £17,334.52 (roughly $27,646.45).

To put that figure into perspective, it’s more than most jobs where I live in South Wales pay for an entire year’s worth of hassle.

Here we go:

I see two types of people involved in the Internet Marketing industry.

First, the real marketers…

Those who appeal to the buyer’s emotions and unconscious needs…

Recommending products and services that solve problems.

And are able to make an income, sometimes a substantial one, from doing so.

Then, there are the teachers…

Those who consider themselves “marketers” but don’t do any actual marketing.

The logical, rational part that doesn’t influence the sale.

That’s if they are trying to make the sale at all!

Teachers misguidedly believe they are “helping” others in a similar position to them when all they are doing is offering a distraction and passing on their own unprofitable bad habits.

Here are a couple of real world examples:

Example A pounds his subscriber list multiple times per day. He accepts his unsubscribe rate is going to be high and he won’t be “loved” by those on his list. He is somewhat comforted by a $40,000 per month income.

Example B writes thousands of words per week to provide “value” on a make money blog that has an impressive readership. Ironically, he’s too timid to sell anything but believes one day, somehow, his blog will become a business (one for the Underpants Gnomes). Unsurprisingly, he’s flat broke and stuck in a job he hates. Essentially, he has a time consuming and frustrating hobby.

I’m not saying either example is the best or worst way to succeed online.

But, it shows marketers who actively market make money…

While teachers who fill their time with non-marketing activities do not.

I could “teach” this stuff all day…

But, now is neither the time nor place.

It’s often said the key to making money online is by building a relationship with your subscribers.

But, I don’t think it’s entirely possible to achieve this.

Sure, I can talk about marketing on a daily basis…

Sometimes people ask me how long it takes to rank on page one of Google…
