10 Steps to Creating an Authority Blog
For the past few days I have eagerly awaited a free report promised by Brian Clark, founder of the highly popular and authoritative CopyBlogger website. Today, it was released and in it contained 10 fundamental rules to becoming an authority blogger and running an authority blog in your niche online.
While I thoroughly enjoyed reading the report what was even more satisfying was I am actually doing the things he wrote about. It just goes to prove what I am gaining from being coached by both Rich Schefren and Alex Jeffreys actually works and there is no big secret to becoming successful online.
You either follow a proven system which works. Or you don’t.
I recommend you head over to Authority Rules and get yourself a copy Of Brian’s report but I am also going to outline the 10 steps you need to follow if you are going to run an authority blog in your chosen niche and relate each point to what I am doing currently.

1. The Winning Difference
Standing out from the crowd. Your unique selling point. Your position in people’s minds. Or however else you want to describe how to differentiate yourself.
The first thing Alex discussed when setting up a blog was to write about your back story because this will enable people to identify with you and will ensure all of the content you go on to produce will be unique you.
My back story is I have been doing internet marketing, albeit badly, for over a decade and even managed it full time for the last three. However, I have been trying to make money online the “wrong way” for a long time and now it’s time to do things differently. I am now charting my rise to success in my blog for people to follow.

2. Teach People – Don’t Try to Sell to Them
One of the phrases I have heard time and time again since taking up the coaching programs is people love to buy but they don’t like being sold to.
The key to making money online is to give away as much quality, free content as possible on your blog to build trust between your readers and yourself and establish yourself as an authority blogger.
This type of content brings in traffic and also backlinks which allows your content to rank higher in the search engines which will in turn bring in even more visitors to your blog.

3. Pillar or Cornerstone Content
Your pillar or cornerstone content is what informs people on how to make use of your blog and do business with you.
I have created a welcome video which outlines what my blog is all about and how people can contact me and also wrote my ebook Stop Slogging Start Blogging! which reveals how to set up your own money making blog.
In terms of further pillar content on my blog, that is an ongoing process I am working on but whenever I learn something new or achieve a new goal, I will be writing a post about how I did it.

4. Headlines and Hooks
Writing a killer headline can help you stand out from the crowd and even if you are an authority in a niche you still have to fight for attention.
A hook is the angle you take on a particular subject which will get people interested in your content. If your content is intriguing then you have half a chance and if you are really fortunate, your content could go viral.
I am learning more about headline writing but think I did a reasonable job with I Don’t Want to be the Asshole at the Party which discussed a recent Twitter faus pax.

5. Make Friends
The web is becoming more of a social place and the need to make friends online is now more important than ever.
The basic truth about building an authority blog is: What others say about you is more important than what you say about yourself.
If you can make friends on Twitter, your content will get retweeted. If you can make friends on the popular social media sites like Digg, Stumbleupon and Reddit, they will vouch for you and increase the chances of your content going viral.
One of the great things about the coaching programs is there is a ready made networking pool and I have made some great friendships already and my authority in this niche will only get stronger as a result.

6. The Money is in the List
How many times have I heard that over the last month or so but it is so true!
For the first time ever in my online career I am focusing a lot of my efforts into building my own loyal subscriber list. Sure, putting out quality content is a great idea but I also want to make sure I can contact those people who regularly visit my blog and enjoy my content.
An opt-in list for people to receive email from you and pay attention to what you say to them over time is the key to building authority and trust with the end goal of them purchasing from you in the future.

7. Don’t Neglect Search Engine Optimisation
While you should always produce content with readers in mind and not search engines, you should not neglect your search engine optimisation duties completely.
When contructing your blog post titles you should consider using the Google Adwords Keywords tool to see how many people are actively searching out a particular keyword or phrase every month. Even a subtle difference of a word or two could mean the difference between thousands of unique visitors arriving every month.
Optimising your Wordpress blog is easy if you use the All in One SEO Pack plugin. I use this and with it you can create a headline for your visitors which is visble on your blog post but then create a Meta Title tag, keywords and description based around keywords for the benefits of the search engines.
Yes, you can have the best of both worlds!

8. Give Google a Helping Hand
An overlooked aspect to optimising your blog is checking the actual code behind it.
You will often hear that Wordpress is one of the best platforms to use if you are building a blog (or a static website these days as well) and that it is very SEO friendly.
While this is true the sheer number of poorly coded, cobbled together themes which are freely available on the internet means even though you are using Wordpress, your blog may not in fact be very search engine friendly.
Ideally, you should only obtain your themes from a trusted source which you know has been put together by highly skilled, professional coders.

9. Invest in a High Quality Blog Theme
As well as sloppy code, some of the free Wordpress blog themes just don’t cut it for me as professional enough to be taken seriously as an authority in a niche.
Of course, content is king but it also needs to be backed up by a professional design. Unfortunately, people do judge a book by its cover.
One of the best investments you will make is in a high quality theme. My blog uses the Streamline theme created by the highly talented Brian Gardner and in my opinion, it just oozes class.
I have used Brian’s themes for a number of web projects over the years and I cannot recommend his work highly enough.

10. Look After Your Followers
When you become an authority in your niche you become a leader.
Seth Godin created a new buzzword for online authority with his new book Tribes and has tapped into the primal psychological need for people to follow a leader and belong.
With authority comes power but if used correctly it can build trust, respect and admiration. If you treat your tribe well, they will serve you well.
Final Thoughts
Becoming an authority blogger in your niche is not something that will happen overnight but it is something you can work on each day.
Keep adding quality content to your blog and supplement this with incredible free-to-download reports that you could easily charge money for, tutorial videos and podcasts.
If people can see you are legitimate, sincere and actually care enough about them to help solve their problems they will trust, respect and someday want to do business with you.
As you can see from the above, running an authority blog in your niche is no big secret, it will just take time, patience and dedication!
If I have missed anything off this list then please leave your thoughts and suggestions as a comment below.

David,
It seems every time I return to your blog I’m stuck reading and reading because of all the great
posts you write (value). They’re awesome.
This one just reaffirms some of the things we talked about when we last skyped and gives
me a couple new things too.
Awesome…. thx
Rob
Hi Rob,
I am glad you think my posts are valuable. Coming from a man of your calibre, that means a lot!
It was awesome reading Bryan’s report on building an authority blog and thinking to myself: “I’m already doing a lot of this stuff!” so we must all be on the right track with the coaching!
Keep in touch.
David
Wow David
You a very intelligent man my friend why are you not a millionaire??
oh dam I forgot to sign up to those social network sites you wanted me to do.
I am right on it dude.
David its almost friday and I have not done anything special for your mention friday thingy.
dam what shall I do??
speak soon my friend
marcus
Hi Marcus,
Thanks for the comment!
While I believe I am quite an intelligent person I also think it has been my downfall in that I probably try to overcomplicate things and miss the obvious.
That’s what has been great about the coaching process – it really has been a case of “back to basics” and doing the simple things properly to set up a sustainable online business.
As far as the millionaire bit, well, we should all fall under that category in a few years time when we are all established big guns in this industry
Speak to you soon.
David
Thanks for this informative post. I am doing some of the points you mentioned and I think I have to improve on others. I recently moved over to using Thesis theme and my SEO has improved a lot and I’m trying to use better headlines to attract more traffic.
BTW, I have a Monday roundup of great posts I find and I will be adding this one as I think many could benefit from you and your blog.
Hi George,
Thank you for your comment. I have heard a lot of great things about the Thesis theme but when I experimented with it I wasn’t overly keen on the layout.
Not that there is anything wrong with it, it just didn’t suit me personally.
I would be honoured if you would include this post as part of your round up and I will be looking on Monday with keen interest to see if I have made the final cut!
David
David-
Monumental post! Really foundational stuff! Whenever I see someone gain such leader / authority status, I often have wondered what steps they took, and traits they have demonstrated that have pushed them to the forefront. Then VIOLA…you’ve gone and broken it down quite well! Thanks!!
Blog looks great as well. Really quite a nice theme. The South Park reference was a major plus of course!
Hi Rich,
Thank you for your kind comment!
I can’t take full credit for this post though, it is based on Brian Clark of Copyblogger fame’s latest free report. You should check it out.
You are right about Cartman, I can’t wait to have as much AUTHORITAH as he does
David
Dave,
Yet another excellent post, I just can’t help coming back to your blog, there’s always some new decent content on here. How do you do it? Your posts are lengthly, but dont feel dragged out.
I’ve got so much to learn,
Rob
Hi Rob,
I am glad you are enjoying what I am doing here, it means I must be on the right track!
I have always had a passion for writing so I find it quite easy to come up with something to blog about. I should have concentrated on blogging years ago I think rather than wasted time on chasing the money elsewhere!
Just have a look at what other bloggers in your niche are writing about and take inspiration from that. Plug as many relevant blog RSS feeds as you can into a reader and just scan what is being discussed every day.
You will never be without new material to write about ever again, I promise!
David
David your blog just gets better & better just watched your video
and read your latest post I “should be sorting my own blog out but cant
because i am reading yours, this blogs a money winner and you have reminded me to get on with my list cheers
mick
Hi Mick,
Thanks for dropping by. I can’t be held responsible for keeping you from working on your own business, haha!
I am glad you like the blog and hope you find some useful stuff here.
David
David you have another great post here especially the part about pillar content. I resisted that for a long time preferring to use plr instead of my head. Thanks for a reminder of what it takes to have a site someone will actually want to stick around and read.
Doug
Hi Doug,
PLR has it’s place. You could use that type of content as a framework for a particular article, ebook etc but it needs to be thoroughly rewritten in your own style and have your own personality and experiences injected throughout.
People are reading your blog for YOU not some generic content they could get anywhere else.
David
Hi David,
Thanks for your post, I found it very useful, I read through all the 10 points , it’s very much what we are learning from Alex Jeffrey’s, but there are a coulple I may be negleting, and now I can focuss on improving them. Thanks again, your information has been of great benefit to me.
All the Best
Michael.
Hi Michael,
I am glad the post was helpful to you. It just goes to show that becoming an authority in your niche may take some time, but it is not impossible.
David
Thanks David,
That’s a very detailed post with a lot of good content in it.
One of my concern is the theme. I’ve switched to a new theme and I quite like it now and it’s pretty smooth and have the functionality that i want. But how do we know if our themes are search engine friend?? Any tools to find out if there are bugs within the themes that can be a problem with Google??
Huddson
Hi Huddson,
There are a few plugins you can use on your blog, namely the All in One SEO Pack and the Google Sitemap Generator, to ensure it is SEO friendly.
As for the theme itself, you can use something like http://validator.w3.org/ to check if the code is valid. My blog is showing a lot of errors so that is something I need to take a look at.
David
David, you highlight what I think is a much overlooked aspect of the power of a blog. And you’ve highlighted some excellent ideas for us to add to our credentials. I’m familiar with some of them but you’ve added more ideas for me to apply in my own blogging.
Thanks !
Roger
Hi Roger,
We all want to be seen as authority figures in our niche and your blog is the best way of achieving that goal. Hopefully this post can help you get into the right mindset when creating new content on your blog.
David
Hey Dave,
Another great post… i keep finding myself back here everyday now and im learning something new each time.
Thank you and keep it coming
Nick
Hi Nick,
I am delighted you find my blog useful.
I will try to keep cranking out the good stuff!
David
Hey David,
Everywhere I look I seem to see your name, you are at the top of many people’s “top commentators” lists!!
This is a great post, and I love the way you break it up with pictures, it makes it much easier on the eye…something I have been meaning to do…
There are some great points in here. Breaking it down like this really makes me think about what I am doing with mine! I have been playing around with the colors on my theme to make it look more professional, so hopefully I have succeeded
I will be applying the others, and making sure my blog is as professional as it can be…thanks!
Talk real soon,
Paul
Hi Paul,
I am trying to increase my bran awareness as much as possible and yes, I have been visiting a lot of other blogs.
I am glad you like the post. I think it is important our blogs have a real purpose and direction. I have failed with previous blogs but that is because I didn’t really know where I was going with it and thought I should just have a blog because that’s “what you are supposed to do”.
I have been checking up on your blog and the design looks great! You have the makings of something really good there so keep it up!
David
Thanks David,
far too often people think of the internet as this magic get rich quick thing.
It’s not.
It is however another tool (an amazing one) to enhance the core principles
of a solid business that’s realistically providing solutions for a customer in need.
Your points are well made and very sensible to employ.
Who would have thought of actually treating people like people.
Thanks again,
Rick
Great post. One thing I find though, is that there are a few authority blogs that waste more time than actually give good content. Some people just know how to market themselves and they become authorities in the industry. Do you feel the same way? I always wondered why people waste time reading garbage posts on supposedly authority sites.
Gadzooks! I’m doing a lot of this already, which is good I guess! I really agree with the teaching and personalization elements. I hate to be sold to, but I believe that by providing real value to people they will be faithful followers over time.
I’m pretty social, but I still feel like that could use some more work. Definitely need to work on getting my blog out there a little more
Great tips David!
David a great write up and it made me realize many things..Mistakes which I’m making to make money online…
I was about to forget that I make money because ppl trust me and my words and seeing easy money I was about to misguide them with wrong product for affiliate…but after reading your article I realize how important it is to maintain your authority in a field…….!!
Hi David,
This is my second visit to your blog and the first time commenting. I really like your post on Creating an Authority Blog.
I agree with the points you are making.
#1 is where you are doing really well.
I can’t get over how you found the right pictures to illustrate the points. One green m&m in the sea of blue m&ms. The cornerstone, the hook and all.
Where did you find all the pictures ?
The point about not neglecting SEO is very crucial I think. Many bloggers completely neglect this.
Having a professional theme is very important especially when you start getting up there like you are.
I plan to visit more often now that I realize the value that can be found here.
Vance.
Hi Vance,
Thanks for leaving me such a great comment!
I am glad you like the blog, I am trying my hardest to make it one of the best resources for new internet business around!
The photos are all from Flickr, there are millions on there!
David
I’m sharing these excellent tips across Social Networks today. While I do prefer Thesis and use it on many blogs it is good to see another blogger making a specific recommendation. There is value in sharing what you recommend and why. I wish more bloggers would be willing to do just that.
Thanks David, This not only a great post… you’re a good communicator and writer. Authority rules the world of blogging. There are a lot of blogger’s named Pete and repeat. Original content that comes from a heart of passion on a subject and taps into a wealth of knowledge on a subject makes a blogger an authority. It’s not just knowledge but being passionate and communicating with enthusiasm I always encourage my subscribers to blog what they love! thanks, Mark Petticord
I really enjoyed this article a lot David. We also enjoy seeing you on Blogussion, you add a lot of value to our community. Thanks for outlining such a powerful resource.
Seth W´s last blog ..Reaching New Customers By Expanding Your Vision
Hi Seth,
Thanks for dropping by, I am a huge fan of Blogussion and love to see what you have written about next!
I am glad you find what I contribute to your blog valuable and hope to see you are here more often in the future!
David
Hey David, thanks for this awesome post! It confirms that I’m going the right way. I’m building a new blog and all the steps I took are in your article! That doesn’t mean your post was useless to me, on the contrary it’s very important for me to get confirmations on what I’m doing and heading to. This is not rocket science but well… I think we got the perfect recipe here! So Thank You!
